IMPORTANT YEARBOOK AD REMINDER from Sally

The forms, photos and messages for this year's yearbook recognition ads (those 1/6 color page dedications to graduates typically found at the back of the SGS yearbook) are due to my (Sally's) SGS mailbox on Thursday, March 1st...that's the day after tomorrow! A while back I sent you all an attachment of the recognition ad form, followed up by a hard copy sent home with your 8th grader. Also know that you may send me your recognition ad messages and photos electronically. The photos must be 300DPI JPEGs - any other form or size will not work with our online system. Please contact me via email with any last minute questions or concerns. smclaughlin@seattlegirlsschool.org I look forward to receiving your ads!

Electricity with MM

Today in class students practiced identifying resistors using color codes and began assembling their first practice circuit project, Blinky the Robot. This involves reading circuit diagrams, installing and soldering components correctly. Students who were absent today can make a special appointment with MM in order to learn the basic soldering skills we covered in the afternoon core. We will be soldering our personal circuit projects that students chose next week! Hurray for electricity!

Message from Bert - Social Studies and Math Test Retakes

We returned this week to our Early Modern stories. Most of the girls got off to a great start with their writing before the mid-Winter break. We had our initial draft (800-1200 words) due that week and will have our next draft (1800-2500 words) due on Thursday this week. I had several girls check in with me before break about not being able get the first draft in before break because of school visits or family vacations. I assured them that this was not a problem as long as they got cracking when they got back from break. If you think this might have applied to your daughter, please ask her how her story is going. As all of our stories are being drafted and peer-reviewed online, you can also see her work by asking her for her blog address or see the full class set at our class blog (historywriting.blogspot.com).

A quick reminder that we are offering girls the opportunity to retake any section of their Math test that they scored less than a 3 on during lunch this week (Tu-Th). The tests were taken on the Thursday before the break and returned with scores the next day. Ask your daughter how she did and encourage her to take advantage of the retake, if needed, as well as to get extra practice or support from MM or myself at lunch or during homework center before then.

Message from MM - upcoming field trips!

Hello everyone!
As we prepare for Mission to Mars we have several exciting field trips coming up. I thought I'd list them all for reference here as well as give you some extra information.

Friday, March 9th: depart SGS 9:30am, return SGS by lunch
Visit Clarisonic!
As part of our studies in electronics and circuitry, we'll be visiting Clarisonic's factory where we can see a production line in motion. We are lucky to have this connection through a friend of the Seasholes family. Thank you Craig and Polly and to all our fabulous carpool drivers!

Monday, March 12th: 9am-3pm
Microgravity Training!
We have the exciting opportunity to work with Undersea Admiralty Sciences to do an introductory scuba experience, specifically a neutral buoyancy dive. In their crews, students will spend approximately 30 minutes in a swimming pool with certified dive instructors learning the basics of scuba diving and then completing a challenge underwater. Neutral buoyancy is one of two ways to simulate microgravity here on Earth. When not diving, groups of students will be working with Sally, Bert and MM on other activities related to Mission to Mars. Your students have been given paperwork and permission slips, which is a required part of the dive. Our certified dive instructor, Mischi Carter, has worked with many student groups and assures me that even novice swimmers have participated in these programs with great success.
We are asking students/crews to arrange for their own transportation since we have undoubtedly tapped out all our generous carpool drivers. Similarly to flight day, we will be meeting at Underwater Sports at 9am and students will be dismissed at 3pm. The address is: 10545 Aurora Ave North; Seattle 98133

Tuesday, March 13th: 12noon-3pm
Challenger Mission at the Museum of Flight
As part of our last minute training for Mission to Mars, we'll participate in one of the Museum of Flight's simulations to practice our teamwork and communication skills. Sally will be taking students to the Museum while Bert and MM stay behind and build our shuttle. Students will be eating lunch a bit early this day to faciliate transportation.

Wednesday, March 14th: 9am-noon
Apollo Moon School at the Museum of Flight
This is a new program at the Museum of Flight that we have added to our pre-Mission to Mars activities. Students will return to school in time to eat lunch and attend internships.

If you have questions about any of these upcoming fieldtrips, please feel free to send MM an email (mcallahan@seattlegirlsschool.org).
Thanks for your ongoing support as we prepare for Mission to Mars!

Welcome to the 8th Grade Blog

Hello students, families and friends! Always looking for new and improved ways of communicating, we've started an 8th grade blog. You'll be able to read messages and updates from Bert, Sally and MM on a regular basis and at your convenience. Please let us know if this new system works for you.
Thanks!
